Pirate Volleyball Wins Twice On Saturday


SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball squad played a rare conference - non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, but picked up a pair of 3-0 wins at the ARC in Savannah, defeating Augusta State and West Georgia.

The Pirates (11-4, 3-1 PBC) began the afternoon with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 Peach Belt Conference win over Augusta State (8-8, 1-4 PBC), then finished off the day with a 25-7, 25-19, 25-20 win over West Georgia (8-11).

Against the Jaguars, the Pirates suffered from 14 service errors - including nine in the second set alone - but the defense held Augusta State to just an .088 hitting percentage on the afternoon in picking up the victory. Sophomore Torrie Bevolo led the way by hitting .308 with a team-high 11 kills, while freshman Kathrin Standhardinger notched nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Freshman Kristin Standhardinger tallied 36 assists and sophomore Casey Howett notched a match-high 20 digs.

For Augusta State, Lagi Roberts led the way with 11 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Two-time All-PBC middle hitter Jessica Howard had a rare match where she hit .000 (3 kills, 3 errors, 16 attacks) though she did add a match-high three blocks. Ashley Zappitell recorded 20 assists and Lindsey Weider added 12 digs.

AASU heated up in the second match of the day against the Wolves, holding West Georgia to just one kill in a first-set win and a -.122 hitting percentage for the entire match, while hitting .237. The Pirates also recorded 10 service aces.

Kathrin Standhardinger led the way in the second match with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while Bevolo added eight kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Kristin Standhardinger tallied 28 assists as well.

For the Wolves, Jasmine Dotson led with five kills, Taylor Mense notched 14 assists and Ellie Murphy added eight digs.

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, September 30, with a 7:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match against Flagler.
