2009 Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic: Day One Wrap

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Day one of the 2009 Chatham
Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball Classic was sweep-filled as all six
matches were three-set affairs on Friday afternoon at Alumni Arena
in Savannah. Wingate, Lynn and Barry all came away with a pair of
wins in the 11th annual Classic, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State
University.
The premier matchup took place in the evening as Wingate - winners
of 34 consecutive regular season matches dating back to last year -
took on the host AASU Pirates. The Bulldogs staved off three set
points in the first set, eventually taking the set on back-to-back
kills by Stormi Gale, en route to a 28-26, 25-22, 25-19 victory,
stretching their regular season winning streak to 35. Gale led all
players on the evening with 13 kills, hitting .321, while also
collecting 14 digs. Liz Willis distributed 35 assists and Maggie
Malone picked up 16 digs as well for Wingate, while AASU was led by
freshman Kathrin Standhardinger's 10 kills, freshman Kristin
Standhardinger's 29 assists and 16 digs and Torrie Bevolo's 15
digs.
Lynn picked up a quick 25-15, 25-9, 25-8 win over Queens (NC) in
its second match of the night to go 2-0 on the day. Kala Abdell
notched 10 kills and hit .368, while Katie Bradley hit .667 with
nine kills and Devon Woolard notched 25 assists. Erinn Moore led
Queens with 13 assists and six digs.
In the day's first matches, Wingate swept past Queens in three,
25-12, 25-10, 25-13. Grace Krauser led the Wingate attack with nine
kills to go along with four digs and three blocks while hitting
.389. Junior setter Amanda Clark had 18 assists and five digs while
sophomore setter Liz Willis collected 12 assists and nine digs.
Queens was led by Brittany Harvey's seven kills, Erinn Moore's 17
assists and Sarah Malpass' 17 digs. Barry defeated Flagler in
three, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21, behind Julia Ridley and Ady Alcantara's
10 kills apiece. Flagler was led by Meg Weathersby's 10 kills.
The second set of matches were also 3-set sweeps. Lynn defeated
Flagler, 25-23, 25-21, 25-13, behind Katie Bradley's 10 kills,
Devon Woolard's 34 assists and Lacy Redwine's 19 digs. Flagler was
led again by Weathersby with 10 kills, while Katie Beale chipped in
10 digs and Olivia Snipes tallied 15 assists. Barry, meanwhile,
defeated Lander in three sets, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19. Julia Teixeira
led the Barry attack by hitting .440 with 13 kills and 13 digs,
while Libby Walter notched 21 assists. Lander was led by Ashley
Ferry's 11 digs and six kills from Melissa McCracken.
Play concludes on Saturday with seven matches, beginning at 11:00
a.m. with Wingate against Flagler and Lander vs. Queens (NC). Host
AASU takes on Barry at 1:30 p.m. and wraps up the Classic with a
6:00 p.m. match against Lynn.
