2009 Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic: Day Two Wrapup

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Barry University was the only
team to emerge unscathed after the second day of the 2009 Chatham
Orthopedics Priate Volleyball Classic, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic
State, on Saturday.
The Bucs went 4-0 in the tournament after two wins on Saturday,
highlighted by a gritty five-set win - 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-22,
15-8 - over Wingate, handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the
season and ending their regular season 36-match win streak. Julia
Teixeira led the way with 18 kills, while Ady Alcantara had 15
kills and Julie Priester tallied 43 assists for Barry. Wingate was
led by Stormi Gale's classic-high 22 kills and 16 kills from Lauren
Billo.
The host Pirates closed out the Classic with a 25-22, 25-22, 23-25,
25-22 win over Lynn in the evening. AASU's Amy Birkmeier led the
way with 14 kills, while Kathrin Standhardinger hit .346 with 12
kills. Kristin Standhardinger notched 44 assists and 11 digs, while
Lynn was led by Katie Bradley's 12 kills, Devon Woolard's 41
assists and Lacy Redwine's 20 digs.
AASU lost a heartbreaker to begin the day, watching a two-set lead
disappear in Barry's 20-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-16, 15-12 victory. The
match turned in the third set when Barry's Ady Alcantara served 14
straight points to begin the set, sparking the Bucs to the victory.
Julie Teixeira led all players for Barry with 16 kills, while Julia
Ridley added 14 kills. Libby Walter notched 40 assists and Spenser
Rigg added 28 digs. Michele Remlinger led the Pirates with 12 kills
and hit .370, while Kristin Standhardinger added 29 assists and
Casey Howett notched 16 digs.
In the day's first matches, Wingate outlasted Flagler in a marathon
five-set match, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 16-14. Stormi Gale and
Lauren Billo each collected 17 kills, while Jacki Emmenecker added
12 kills and Maggie Malone notched 34 digs. Flagler also got 17
kills apiece from Katie Beale and Justine Burkhardt, while seven
different players registered double-digit digs, led by 23 from
Beale.
Lander picked up a 25-14, 25-10, 25-20 win over Queens (NC) in both
teams' first match of the day as well. Melissa McCracken led the
Bearcats with 11 kills, while Candace LaRocca notched 20 assists
and Magi Nottingham notched 14 digs. Queens (NC) was led by
Brittany Harvey's seven kills, Erinn Moore's 19 assists and Erica
Mazur's 12 digs.
Flagler notched a 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 win over Queens (NC),
finishing the tournament with a 1-3 mark. Lynn notched a 25-15,
25-14, 25-20 win over Lander. Chelsey Semprini hit .421 with 10
kills, while Lacy Redwine notched 17 digs for the Knights. Candace
LaRocca notched 20 assists to lead the Bearcats.
AASU returns to action on Saturday, September 18, with a 7:00 p.m.
