Women's Tennis Competes at FGCU Invitational
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The
Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis teams went a combined 4-2
in singles and 6-0 in doubles at the first day of action in the
Florida Gulf Coast Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla., on Friday.
The Pirates' singles players all faced off against players from
Stetson on Friday. Alida Muller-Wehlau notched a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win
over Valentina Galbarini, while Martina Beckmann picked up a 6-2,
7-5 win over Breanna Atkinson. Gabriella Kovacs notched a 6-2, 4-6,
6-3 win over Carolina de los Santos and Tina Ronel beat Unnati
Purushotham, 7-5, 6-2. Stetson's Shannon Gunning defeated AASU's
Kathleen Henry, 6-3, 6-3, while Katherine Nowicki defeated Alisa
Kagukina, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, each of the Lady Pirates' teams picked up a pair of
wins. Beckmann and Muller-Wehlau defeated FGCU's Villemond and
Leclerq, 8-2, then knocked off Stetson's Atkinson and Nowicki, 8-6.
Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel defeated Stetson's Gunning and
Purushotham, 8-6, and Florida Atlantic's Augustin and Wimmer, 8-3.
Finally, Kagukina and Kovacs defeated FGCU's Evans and Bechtel,
8-4, as well as Florida Atlantic's Mrazkova and Phillips, 8-1.
Play continues in the FGCU Invitational on Saturday with and
doubles matches beginning at 8:00 a.m.
