Lady Pirates Compete In Waco, The Landings On Friday


WACO, Texas & SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis teams are in action this weekend in two locales, with the Lady Pirates performing well in first-day action.

In the HEB Women's Invitational, hosted by Baylor University, fifth-seeded Sona Novakova picked up a 6-2, 6-4 singles win over Ashley Turpin (Texas A&M). meanwhile, Alida Muller-Wehlau notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nikola Matovicova (Texas-Arlington). Gabriella Kovacs suffered a 7-6 (4), 6-3 loss to Karolina Filipak (Baylor) and Martina Beckmann dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to third-seeded Elze' Potgieter (Texas A&M).

In doubles action, Kovacs and Novakova notched an 8-6 win over Guzman and Hanle (Rice), while third-seeded Beckmann and Muller-Wehlau picked up a 8-4 win over Joubert/Paraschiv (North Texas).

Play continues in Waco at 8:00 a.m.

In Savannah, the Pirates were competing at the Landings Invitational on Friday. Kathleen Henry picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emily Lauten of Virginia Tech, but then dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 decision to the College of Charleston's Holly Dowse.

Tina Ronel also split singles matches, defeating Katie Blow of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-0, but losing to Whitney Byrd of Auburn-Montgomery, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. 

Alisa Kagukina suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) loss to Nathlalie Sienkob of Auburn-Montgomery in her lone match.

In doubles, the duo of Ronel and Henry defeated the College of Charleston team of Evan and Viana, 9-8 (1).

Play continues at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with one singles match (Kagukina) and at 1:30 p.m. with a doubles match (Ronel/Henry)
