Novakova Advances At ITA Small College National Championships


MOBILE, Ala. - Armstrong Atlantic State sophomore and top-seed Sona Novakova advanced to the semifinals of the women's DII singles bracket on Thursday at the 2009 ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Ala.

Novakova defeated Anastasia Dabiza of Upper Iowa, 6-0, 6-0, on Thursday morning. The defending ITA DII singles champion advances to face Julia Arguello of East Central University on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. - Arguello was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Amber Chandronnait of Southern New Hampshire.

The final of the DII women's singles bracket will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with "Super Bowl" play pitting the winners of the DII, DIII, NAIA and NJCAA brackets immediately following.

On the men's side, junior Rafael Array lost to top-seeded Philip Pakebusch of Valdosta State, 6-1, 7-6 (6), in his first-round match on Thursday. Array will play an 8:30 a.m. match on Friday morning against West Virginia Wesleyan's Marc Rosner in consolation action. Rosner lost, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to Antonio Garcia Santos of Drury.
