Lady Pirates Wrap Up Weekend Tennis Action


WACO, Texas & SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team wrapped up tournament action at the Baylor HEB Invitational and the Landings Invitational on Sunday, the final scheduled tournament for the Lady Pirates this Fall.

In Waco, the doubles team of Sona Novakova and Gabriella Kovacs lost an 8-5 decision to Texas A&M's Sheri Olivier and Nazari Urbina in the doubles bracket final.

In a consolation singles semifinal match, Martina Beckmann lost 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Julie Chao of Rice.

Meanwhile, this weekend a trio of Lady Pirates participated in the Landings Invitational in Savannah.

On Saturday, Tina Ronel defeated Auburn-Montgomery's Natalie Sienkob, 7-6 (3), 6-2, to earn a berth in Sunday's final. Kathleen Henry defeated the College of Charleston's Anna Lee Evans, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a berth in the third-place match on Sunday.

Alisa Kagukina dropped both her matches on Saturday, losing 6-2, 6-1 to Irene Viana of the College of Charleston and 6-4, 6-3 to Emily Lauten of Virginia Tech.

Sunday's action saw Holly Dowse of Virginia Tech defeat Ronel, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the first-place match. Henry picked up third place with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Whitney Byrd of Auburn-Montgomery. Kagukina dropped a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3 decision to Hannah Appleyard of Auburn-Montgomery as well.

In doubles, Ronel and Henry defeated Lauten and Blow of Virginia Tech, 8-1, but dropped the doubles, 8-4, to teammate Kagukina and College of Charleston's Holly Dowse.

Sona Novakova will wrap up the Lady Pirates' fall season by participating in the ITA DI National Indoor Championships from November 5-8 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn., hosted by Yale University. Novakova will be the only non-DI player in the field.
