Five Lady Pirates Reach Double Figures In 76-63 Win At ASU


AUGUSTA, Ga. - Five Armstrong Atlantic State players reached double figures in a 76-63 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over host Augusta State on Saturday afternoon in both teams' league opener at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Lady Pirates (2-4, 1-0 PBC) won their second straight contest, while Augusta State (1-6, 0-1 PBC) suffered its third straight loss.

AASU shot 50 percent in the first half, including hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers, to open up a 41-34 lead at halftime. The Lady Pirates then scored the first nine points after intermission, building a 50-34 lead and going on for the victory.

Senior Portia Jones notched a season-high 16 points, while junior Arpine Amirkhanyan collected 14 points and junior Augusta native Dartayvia Thomas added 12 points. Sophomore Brooke Long came off the bench to chip in 11 points, while freshman Jazmin Walker added 10 points and eight assists ont he evening.

Augusta State was led by Brittany Jarrard, who hit 6-of-12 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 three-pointers, for a game-high 18 points. Waneta Carlisle came off the bench to add 14 points and Briyana Evans notched 13 points.

The Lady Pirates will break for finals and return to action on Friday, December 18, with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Edward Waters in the 2009 Hampton Inn & Suites Fall Finals Classic.
